I always hated school because I had to do subjects I didn’t like.

Now i’ve started college on a Art&Design course and I was given the impression that in this course I could choose what I want to do and take it further - Not the case though, I’ve got to do a WHOLE year of experimenting & paying out for subjects I don’t want to take on, and to top it off, I HAVE to do printmaking & 3D (They’re like the maths and english of the art course, Everyone hates it but we’ve got to do it)

Most people on the course get ema, learning grants and all sorts of money to support the course, They get about £30 a week! Where as I get nothing because my parents earn to much, but they can’t suppost my college work and the family & household, which is fair enough. (I’ve tried geting grants and money, but the college wont budge, even with my situation, so i’ve resulted to not turning up to the lessons I can’t afford eg. photography)
By the way, I can’t get a job either because i babysit my sisters during out of college hours because we have a odd family situation.

So basicly i’m hating my course, I can’t afford my course, and I have no motivation to go there. I’m good at art, thats why i took the course in the first place and art is what I want to do but I only enjoy 2 subjects so far, and thats all I can afford also.

So what do I do? I’d love to just go work for somthing that does art and i’d be pretty motivated to do that, but the chances of me geting a job in that is pretty slim!
But please don’t say stick at it because otherwise I wont get a good job, because i’m only 16! I don’t expect to get a good job by the time I leave college
I live in the UK, 16 is the age we leave school :D

How is anyone really qualified to judge someone else’s art?

Even when you study art as a student you are just getting more exposure to other people’s opinions, actually narrowing your own perspective and limiting the creativity of your own thoughts and feelings as to what art really is.

Christian art students, can I get your opinion please?

I love pencil drawing, especially portraits. People say I’m good, so I would like to pursue my interest when I start college this winter. But I have one concern… figure drawing. In other words, drawing **** people. The thought of this just seems weird to me. Does this bother any of you guys? If it does, how do you get around it?
It’s not that I don’t think it would be a good teaching tool - because to draw clothed people, you kinda have to know what’s underneath, right? But I have 5 younger siblings and I don’t know how I could keep them from seeing anything I draw. There’s really not a whole lot of privacy in my house, like I couldn’t just close myself into a room for 3 hours while I practice. Plus I usually show everything I draw to everyone in my family to get their thoughts. Besides all this, I have NO idea what my parents would think about this.
And what if they ever have us use a live model? I dunno how I would feel about that!

Thanks for your answers!
Hmm, interesting answers.

It’s not that I think the human body is bad or disgraceful, it’s just that I’m not used to it being paraded about, you know what I mean?
I suppose at some point I’m going to have to come to terms with the fact that every serious artist eventually draws and studies the human body. I suppose I’ll just have to decide how serious I really am - whether I want to pursue it as a career or just do it on the side as a hobby.

And captsnuff, it DOES matter what my parents think. I respect and love them and so I always want to obey their wishes, at least certainly for as long as I live under their roof. I know they aren’t going to love everything I do in my life, but for as long as I can I’d like to avoid unnecessary arguments and conflicts.
Wow, thanks for the answers everybody. Especially sara e, you helped me a lot.
I’m still kinda thinking about this and deciding but it’s not like I have to make a decision by tomorrow so I will have time to organize my thoughts, and decide how to approach my parents about this.

The good thing is my dad said “Well, you like drawing. Maybe you should do that in college.” so I could just kinda say… well, what about figure drawing, what do you think about that, because it’s unavoidable.

Thanks for the answers guys, keep ‘em coming. :)

Can Art be a Path to Peace?

I recently read the yahoo news article about the Iraqi artists painting on the walls to bring beauty to their surroundings. It sounds like a noble effort and I feel, being an art student myself, isn’t a trivial one. I’ve found the beauty of art can be very uplifting and inspiring. I can only imagine how dreadful the barren landscapes and bombed out surroundings must look like, and more importantly, how they must make you feel inside. My question is… Can art help people become more peaceful? Can art be a way to bring a community together and give them a common, peaceful goal? Creating beauty is a deep seeded need in mankind. If people can come together peacefully and create beautiful works of art not only to inspire but to also uplift, couldn’t that be a way to help solve many problems?

I’m an art student who’s been asked by several people to draw their family members in oil pastel. I know the cost of my supplies, but how much do I charge for my work?
